Short-term respite care

Caring for a loved one with a disability is rewarding, but it's also exhausting. If you're an Adelaide carer wondering about NDIS respite care, you're not alone. This guide will help you understand what's available, who's eligible, and how to access this valuable support.

Quick Facts: What You Need to Know

  • New name: "Short Term Accommodation" is now called "Short Term Respite" (as of October 2025)

  • Your funding hasn't changed: It's the same support, just a clearer name

  • Typical allocation: Up to 28 days per year

  • Maximum stay: 14 consecutive days at a time

  • You only pay for what you use: No need to use all 28 days

What Is Short-Term Respite?

Short-term respite gives you a break from caring while your loved one receives quality support in a safe environment. It's designed to help you rest and recharge so you can continue in your caring role.

Respite can be flexible:

  • A few hours each week

  • A weekend each month

  • A week or two for holidays

  • Emergency support when needed

Am I Eligible?

Your loved one might be eligible for short-term respite if they:

  • Live with family, friends, or informal carers

  • Receive more than 6 hours of daily care from informal supports

  • Need high-intensity supports (complex medical care, behaviour support, or night-time assistance)

Not eligible: If your loved one already has extensive paid support like Supported Independent Living (SIL), they usually won't qualify because paid workers already share caring responsibilities.

The key question: Will respite help you continue caring? If yes, it's likely to be funded.

What's Covered?

Included in respite funding:

  • Safe, accessible accommodation

  • Personal care and daily living support

  • Meals and medication management

  • Support workers as needed

  • Help with community activities

Not covered:

  • Entertainment or leisure activities unrelated to disability support

  • General groceries or personal items

  • Long-term accommodation

  • Skill-building programs (covered separately in your plan)

Types of Respite in Adelaide

In-Home Respite: A support worker comes to your home while you take a break. Perfect for short breaks or if your loved one prefers familiar surroundings.

Centre-Based Respite: Your loved one stays at a respite facility with 24/7 care. Great for weekends or longer breaks.

Community-Based Respite: Your loved one joins community activities with support while you rest.

Emergency Respite: Available when you're suddenly unwell or facing a family crisis.

Choosing a Quality Adelaide Provider

Look for:

Trained, qualified staff with First Aid and police checks

Understanding of your loved one's needs (communication, diet, mobility)

Clear communication about services, emergencies, and daily updates

Safe, comfortable facilities that feel welcoming

Good local reputation from other Adelaide families

Top tip: Visit facilities before booking and talk to other families about their experiences.

Getting Started with Respite

First-time tips:

  1. Start with a few hours before longer stays

  2. Visit the location together first

  3. Pack familiar comfort items

  4. Create a detailed care plan with your provider

  5. Stay connected with calls during the stay

It's normal to feel anxious the first time. Most families find it gets easier with each stay.

Let Go of the Guilt

Many carers feel guilty about needing a break. Here's the truth: you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Taking breaks isn't selfish—it's essential. Carers who use respite are healthier, less stressed, and better able to provide patient care long-term.

As one Adelaide mum told us: "I felt guilty the first time, but when I saw how much my son enjoyed himself and how much better I felt afterwards, I realised we both needed it."

How to Add Respite to Your Plan

If respite isn't in your current NDIS plan:

At your next plan review:

  • Document the hours you provide care each day

  • Get letters from health professionals supporting your need for breaks

  • Explain how respite helps you continue caring

  • Be honest about how caring affects your wellbeing

Need help? Your support coordinator can help you prepare for the meeting.

Your Next Steps

  1. Check your plan: See if short-term respite is already funded

  2. Contact providers: Ask questions about their services and approach

  3. Visit facilities: Get a feel for the environment

  4. Book a consultation: Most providers offer free initial meetings
