A Fairer Future for Community Workers – Understanding SA’s New Portable Long Service Leave Scheme

From 1 October 2025, South Australia’s community services sector saw the introduction of a new initiative designed to better support its dedicated workforce — the Portable Long Service Leave Scheme.
This scheme recognises the unique nature of community work, where many employees move between organisations throughout their careers while continuing to serve the same community. Under the new system, eligible workers will be able to carry their long service leave entitlements with them, ensuring their years of service are valued no matter where they work within the sector.
How It Works
Employers who engage staff in the community services sector will need to register with SA Portable Long Service Leave and report quarterly on their eligible workers. A 2.2% levy will apply to wages paid during each reporting period, contributing to each worker’s long service leave fund.
For every quarter worked, employees will accrue three months of service. Once they reach 120 months (10 years) of recorded service, they’ll be entitled to 13 weeks of long service leave. Even if they move between employers, their entitlements continue to grow.
Why It Matters
This initiative is an important step toward fairness and stability for community service professionals. It acknowledges the challenges of contract and grant-based work, where continuity of employment doesn’t always mean staying with one employer.
For the many passionate people working across disability, aged care, and community support, this means their commitment and years of service won’t go unrecognised — no matter where their career takes them.
What Employers Need to Know
From 1 October 2025, community service employers must register any eligible workers with SA Portable Long Service Leave. Regular reporting and levy payments will be required each quarter, and penalties may apply for late submissions or payments.
Support is available through phone, email, or in-person guidance from SA PLSL’s Community Engagement Officers.
Supporting Our Sector
At Parability Support Services, we welcome this initiative as another positive step for our industry. It’s a well-deserved recognition of the vital work our sector provides and a meaningful way to ensure those who dedicate their careers to supporting others are supported in return.
